About the Conference Organizers

The conference is jointly organized by the University of Sarajevo – Faculty of Science and the Geographical Society in the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Department of Geography

The Department of Geography is one of the five departments within the Faculty of Science at the University of Sarajevo and is the oldest higher education institution for geographical studies in Bosnia and Herzegovina. For nearly seven decades, it has continuously advanced geographic science and education, educating generations of experts now active in academic, educational, planning, and development institutions. Over the course of its longstanding history, the department has educated more than a thousand graduates in geography, along with a significant number of Master’s and PhD degree holders in geographic sciences.

The Department of Geography offers academic programs in four specialized tracks:

  • Teaching Geography
  • Regional and Spatial Planning
  • Tourism
  • Environmental Protection

More than 20 faculty members and associates are currently engaged in teaching and research at the department, including full and associate professors, assistant professors, teaching assistants, and professional staff. The department has developed strong international cooperation with numerous higher education and research institutions across Europe, including universities in Zagreb, Novi Sad, Ljubljana, Olomouc, Brno, Graz, Paris, Copenhagen, Pécs, Debrecen, Zadar, Maribor, Koper, and others.

In addition to its educational and research roles, the department regularly organizes scientific symposia and conferences covering all fields of geography. Special emphasis is placed on the integration of modern technologies into the study of geographic space, as well as on addressing current scientific and societal challenges, thereby contributing actively to the development of geography as a scientific discipline both within Bosnia and Herzegovina and beyond.

More information about academic programs and departmental activities is available on the official website: https://geografija.pmf.unsa.ba/

Geographical Society in the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina

The Geographical Society of Bosnia and Herzegovina was established in 1947. Its legal and programmatic successor, after 1995, is the Geographical Society in the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina. In accordance with its statute, the Society operates with the primary goal of promoting, affirming, and advancing geographical science in Bosnia and Herzegovina. The Society has a long-standing tradition of organizing professional and scientific gatherings. To date, it has successfully organized six congresses of geographers of Bosnia and Herzegovina (in 2004, 2008, 2012, 2016, 2020, and 2024), as well as numerous conferences, seminars, and public discussions. It is also the publisher of the scientific journal Geografski pregled (Geographical Review), which serves as an important platform for disseminating research findings across various geographic disciplines, with a particular focus on topics related to the territory of Bosnia and Herzegovina. Membership in the Society is open and voluntary. It brings together geographers from all parts of Bosnia and Herzegovina, as well as other professionals and citizens interested in the development of geography and related sciences and academic disciplines. Through its activities, the Society actively contributes to strengthening scientific discourse and enhancing geographic education and research throughout the country.
